Lucie Kordacova (she/her) is a visual artist from the Czech Republic based in Sheffield, UK. Her practice takes the form of site-responsive installations including sculptures, moving image, costumes and performance and she works extensively with textiles.
Her recent work focuses on the transformation of landscapes and species by human intervention, and the storytelling and mythmaking that reflects and embodies these changes. Central to how individual communities understand the world they inhabit is the stories they tell about their locality and the rituals they enact. As these are passed on from generation to generation they undergo changes and adaptations to new contexts and new temporalities - such changes emerge in Lucie’s work too. She explores how, through traditional and ritualistic objects, songs and stories ancestral knowledge is passed on through our own hands and voices. This transference across time is also an act of translation, another theme central to Lucie’s work as an artist living and working abroad.
Though her work takes on many forms, her practice always responds to the surroundings in which she works and exhibits, whether that be the remnants of Sheffield’s industrial past or the landscapes. The materials she uses are often non-traditional to its use such as embroidering with bog cotton or weaving with seaweed and she is particularly alert to how materials are transformed through use and when transposed to different environments.
Many of her works incorporate performance. Lucie asks what exactly performance consists of, questioning what happens to a performance when the performers are no longer there, or how does the viewer become a performer when they enter the exhibition space and interact with the artwork?
She is part of YSI, Yorkshire Sculpture Network (2025). In 2023 she was an artist at S1 Artspace, and is currently an artist at GLOAM gallery. During 2017-2021 Lucie was a member of resina, a curatorial and artistic collective based across Italy, Sweden and UK. Lucie is a founder of sixtyseven collective, a curatorial platform which supported cultural practitioners in south-east London and was active in 2016-2018. Lucie has worked with galleries and cultural organisations including Cinema For All in Sheffield, South London Gallery, Rowing in London, A4 Space For Contemporary Culture in Bratislava and programmed at community cinema in London - Deptford Cinema.
In 2023 Lucie was selected to receive a specific costume training through ScreenSkills with Emmy and BAFTA winner Jane Petrie, Beth Gillman and Vanessa Lingham via the Start a Career in Costume Programme.
Lucie has an MA in Fine Arts from J.E Purkyne University, and studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and at the Academy of Fine Art and Design in Bratislava at the Studio IN of Ilona Németh. She is an alumna of the REcreative Film School 2017 ran by South London Gallery and EBC Night School ran by Arnolfini in 2022.
