Statement
I understand my practice as sculptural. It takes the form of site-responsive installations including sculpture, moving image, costumes and performance. My background is in textiles and it informs the way I work with my chosen materials, structures and textures.
My recent work focus is on the transformation of landscapes and species by human intervention, and the storytelling and mythmaking that reflects and embodies these changes. Central to how individual communities understand the world they inhabit are the stories they tell about their locality and the rituals they enact. As these are passed on from generation to generation they shift and adapt, responding to new contexts and new temporalities - such transformations emerge in my work too. Through traditional and ritualistic objects, songs and stories, I explore how ancestral knowledge is passed on through our hands and voices. This transference across time is also an act of translation, another theme central to my work as an artist living and working abroad.
Though my work takes on many forms, my practice responds to the surroundings in which I work, whether that be the remnants of Sheffield’s industrial past or the moors and valleys of Derbyshire and Yorkshire, and further afield. I use steel, fibre, sounds, patterns, repetitions and cycles. Many of the materials I use are foraged or reclaimed, such as bog cotton, grass or seaweed, and are arranged or transformed through traditional tactile techniques such as embroidery and weaving. I am particularly alert to how materials are transformed through use and when transposed to different environments.
Many of my works also incorporate performance, reflecting my interest in ritual and community. Furthermore, I aim to interrogate what exactly performance consists of, questioning what happens to a performance when the performers are no longer there; or in exploring how viewers become participants once they enter the exhibition space and interact with the work?
